Faster and lighter iPad 2

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, made a surprise appearance to launch the iPad 2, the latest version of the tablet-style computer, in San Francisco.
Despite having taken a leave of absence due to ill health, a gaunt-looking Jobs presented the new device to a packed conference centre, saying: “We’ve been working on this product for a while now and I just didn’t want to miss today.”
The second generation of the iPad, which goes on sale in the UK on March 25 and in the US on March 11, has two cameras built into the rear and front of the device, both of which take photos and shoot video.
The new device comes preloaded with a new app called Photo Booth, which allows people to take distorted photos of themselves and share them with friends. And users will also be able to use the iPad 2 to video call friends who have either an iPad 2, an iPhone 4 or the latest iPod Touch, using Apple Facetime.

The iPad 2 is one third thinner than the first device and is slightly lighter. It will also be available in white for the first time, as well as the standard black.
Apple has kept the pricing the same, with the cheapest model at $499 (£306).
Jobs said that Apple has installed a new chip inside the iPad 2 which makes the device run up to two times faster than the original iPad. The new chip also allows graphics to load up to nine times faster than the first device. The iPad 2 will also run off the latest Apple operating system, iOS 4.3.
The technology company has also developed a new “smart” case for the iPad 2 which, as well as protecting the large screen, doubles as a stand so people can watch movies with greater ease. The new case hooks on to the hinges of the iPad 2 and folds up into a stand. Users will have to purchase the case separately.
Jobs announced that Apple sold 15 million of the original iPads during 2010 and that he hoped 2011 would be “the year of the iPad 2”, in spite of the many more tablet devices coming on to the market.
With so many units sold by Apple, it’s no surprise that the competition wanted to get in on the act. A year on from the launch of the original iPad in the US on Good Friday, 2010, there are now tablet computers everywhere. Toshiba, Asus and even Next – yes, the clothes people – have jumped into the tablet market.
The problem for rivals is that Apple has delivered the iPad 2 while many of them are on their first version.
The new iPad raises the bar. Carolina Milanesi of analysts Gartner thinks that Apple still leads the tablet market. “You get a different experience,” she says.
She adds that the new iPad “will put more pressure on competitors”.
Apple has been steadily refining and improving its operating system, iOS, since the release of the original iPad, while Android users had to wait until last month for Honeycomb, the first version of Google’s operating system to be designed specifically for tablets. Motorola’s Xoom tablet, the first Honeycomb-powered device, has just been released in the US to generally positive reviews, but still does not have a British release date.
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook will launch in the US on April 10, the company announced yesterday.
At the moment it is Samsung which holds second place. Its Galaxy Tab, a 7in tablet released last September, received very favourable reviews and the company has a new 10in version ready to go head-to-head with the iPad next month.
Apple didn’t invent the tablet computer, such devices have been commercially available since the 1980s, but it didn’t invent the MP3 player or the mobile phone either. Instead, it did what it always does: refine the product, make the design as slick and simple as possible and then market it brilliantly. Without the iPad, it’s unthinkable that so many tablets would be appearing in shops today.
Tablet devices are changing the way many people use computers and changing the perception of computers for others. Earlier this week, JP Rangaswami, chief scientist at cloud computing firm Salesforce, said that he realised the extent of the tablet revolution when he heard about how archaeologists were using them. With fewer holes for dust to get in, no keyboard with moving parts and no need for power or cabling, tablets were perfect for archaeologists in the field. Add in the battery life of an iPad and the fact that it’s easy to use at the strangest of angles – something that’s tricky even with a netbook – and you have an ideal device.
Rangaswami thinks we’re just at the beginning of the touchscreen revolution. “This is not going to be an Apple-only game,” he said, but he acknowledged that Apple has led the way.
To truly understand what makes the iPad “magical”, as Jobs called it, you need to get your hands on one. It responds so perfectly to the touch that it really feels like you are moving objects around with your fingers. It’s seamless; at no point do you sense the computer that sits underneath, drawing pixels in response to your touch. That’s the real genius of the iPad – the way it feels – and it’s clear from looking at some of the weaker tablet competitors that such responsiveness is no mean feat.
A touchscreen device changes the way applications are designed because programmers can allow multi-touch controls and let users zoom in and out using their fingers. Add in an accelerometer, which tells the tablet which way up it is, and apps can take account of that too, offering different displays based on whether the device is held in portrait or landscape configuration.
What at first can seem like a gimmick is in fact a profound change. “Don’t underestimate switching to touch,” says Rangaswami. He points out that young children whose early experiences of technology have been with smartphones and tablets now expect every screen to respond to their touch. It won’t be long before they all do.
